Free IELTS Writing Feedback: The Perfect AI Prompts for ChatGPT
You don’t need an expensive tutor to improve your IELTS Writing.
With the right prompts, AI tools like ChatGPT can give you detailed feedback on your essays — including estimated band scores, specific corrections, and rewritten examples at Band 8+ level.
I’ve tested dozens of prompt variations. These three are the ones that work best.
How to Use These Prompts
- Write your response — Complete a Task 1 or Task 2 under timed conditions
- Copy the prompt below — Choose the one that matches your task type
- Paste into ChatGPT or any AI tools — Add your writing where indicated
- Review the feedback — Pay attention to specific corrections, not just the score
📊 Prompt 1: Academic Task 1 (Graph, Chart, Map, or Diagram)
This prompt is for Academic test-takers who need to describe visual data.
Important: Attach an image of your graph, chart, map, or diagram when you send this prompt.
You are an IELTS examiner. Evaluate my Task 1 response based on the attached image.
First, analyze the image and identify the key features.
Then, evaluate my writing based on the four IELTS criteria:
- Task Achievement (Did I cover all key features? Is there a clear overview?)
- Coherence and Cohesion (Is it well-organized? Are linking words used properly?)
- Lexical Resource (Is the vocabulary appropriate and varied?)
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy (Are sentences varied? Are there errors?)
Give me:
1. Estimated band score for each criterion
2. Overall band score
3. What I did well
4. Specific mistakes with corrections
5. A rewritten version at Band 8+ level
Here is my response:

What This Prompt Does
| Output | Why It Helps |
|---|---|
| Band score per criterion | Shows exactly where you’re losing marks |
| Specific corrections | Learn from your actual mistakes, not generic advice |
| Band 8+ rewrite | See what excellent writing looks like for the same task |
✉️ Prompt 2: General Training Task 1 (Letter)
This prompt is for General Training test-takers who need to write formal, semi-formal, or informal letters.
You are an IELTS examiner. Evaluate my General Training Task 1 letter.
The task is:
[PASTE THE TASK/QUESTION HERE]
My response:
[PASTE YOUR LETTER HERE]
Evaluate based on:
- Task Achievement (Did I cover all bullet points? Is the tone appropriate — formal/semi-formal/informal?)
- Coherence and Cohesion (Is it well-structured? Are paragraphs logical?)
- Lexical Resource (Is vocabulary appropriate for the letter type?)
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy (Are there errors? Is there sentence variety?)
Give me:
1. Estimated band score for each criterion
2. Overall band score
3. What I did well
4. Specific mistakes with corrections
5. A rewritten version at Band 8+ level
Common Mistakes the AI Will Catch
- Wrong tone (too formal for a friend, too casual for a complaint)
- Missing bullet points from the task
- Weak opening or closing phrases
- Repetitive vocabulary
📝 Prompt 3: Task 2 Essay (Academic & General)
This prompt works for both Academic and General Training Task 2 essays.
You are an IELTS examiner. Evaluate my Task 2 essay.
The task is:
[PASTE THE ESSAY QUESTION HERE]
My response:
[PASTE YOUR ESSAY HERE]
Evaluate based on:
- Task Response (Did I fully address all parts? Is my position clear throughout?)
- Coherence and Cohesion (Is the essay well-organized? Are ideas logically connected?)
- Lexical Resource (Is vocabulary varied and precise? Are there spelling errors?)
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy (Are sentences varied? Are there grammatical errors?)
Give me:
1. Estimated band score for each criterion
2. Overall band score
3. What I did well
4. Specific mistakes with corrections
5. One paragraph rewritten at Band 8+ level
6. Three vocabulary upgrades I could use next time
Why This Prompt Works
Most people just ask AI to “check my essay.” That gives you vague feedback.
This prompt forces the AI to:
- Evaluate using the actual IELTS criteria
- Give specific corrections (not just “improve your vocabulary”)
- Show you what Band 8+ looks like for your exact topic
- Suggest vocabulary upgrades you can use immediately
🎯 Tips for Better Results
1. Add Your Target Score
Add this line at the end of any prompt:
I'm aiming for Band 7. Focus on the mistakes that are costing me marks at this level.
This helps the AI prioritize feedback that matters for your goal.
2. Ask Follow-Up Questions
After getting feedback, ask:
- “Why is this sentence awkward?”
- “Give me 3 alternative ways to write this paragraph”
- “What’s a more academic way to say [phrase]?”
3. Track Your Progress
Create a simple document:
| Date | Task Type | Score | Main Mistakes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 6 | Task 2 | 6.5 | Weak conclusion, repetitive vocab |
| Jan 8 | Task 1 | 6.0 | Missing overview, wrong verb tense |
After 10-20 essays, you’ll see patterns in your mistakes.
4. Practice the Same Task Type
If you got 6.0 on a line graph, do another line graph next. Apply the AI’s feedback immediately.
⚠️ How Accurate Are AI Band Scores?
AI band scores are useful for tracking progress, but they’re not perfect predictions.
In My Experience
From reviewing hundreds of AI-scored essays, I’ve noticed AI tends to score slightly lower than human examiners — often by 0.5 bands.
Why? AI is cautious. It flags potential issues that a human examiner might overlook or interpret more generously. A human can understand what you meant to say; AI only sees what you actually wrote.
This means:
- If AI gives you 6.5, you might get 6.5-7.0 from a human
- If AI gives you 6.0, you’re likely in the 6.0-6.5 range
How to Use AI Scores Wisely
| Do This | Don’t Do This |
|---|---|
| Track improvement over time | Treat AI scores as exact predictions |
| Focus on specific feedback, not just the number | Panic if AI scores lower than your target |
| Use AI for daily practice | Skip human feedback entirely before your test |
The verdict: AI gives you useful feedback for daily practice and shows you where to improve. But before your actual test, get 1-2 essays reviewed by a human tutor — just to calibrate your expectations.
