ChatGPT Custom Instructions for IELTS: Set Once, Improve Every Conversation
ChatGPT Custom Instructions for IELTS: Set Once, Improve Every Conversation
Every time you practice IELTS with ChatGPT, do you find yourself typing the same thing?
“Check my grammar.”
“Focus on articles.”
“I’m preparing for IELTS Band 7.”
What if ChatGPT already knew all of this — every time you started a new chat?
That’s exactly what Custom Instructions does. You set it once, and every conversation automatically focuses on your IELTS weaknesses.
In this post, I’ll show you how to set up ChatGPT’s Custom Instructions for IELTS preparation, with copy-paste templates you can use right away.
What Are Custom Instructions?
Custom Instructions (also called Personalization) is a ChatGPT feature that lets you give ChatGPT background information about yourself and how you want it to respond.
Once you set it up:
- Every new chat already knows your goals
- Every response is tailored to your needs
- You don’t have to repeat yourself
For IELTS preparation, this means:
- ChatGPT always knows your target band score
- It automatically checks for your common mistakes
- It gives you practice exercises without you asking
Think of it as training ChatGPT to be your personal IELTS tutor — one that remembers everything about you.
How to Access Custom Instructions
In ChatGPT:
- Click your profile picture (bottom left corner)
- Click “Personalization”

You’ll see custom instructions:

Why This Matters for IELTS
Without Custom Instructions, every chat starts from zero. You have to explain:
- You’re preparing for IELTS
- Your target score
- Your weaknesses
- How you want feedback
With Custom Instructions, ChatGPT already knows all of this. Every conversation becomes more efficient and more targeted.
Here’s what changes:
| Without Custom Instructions | With Custom Instructions |
|---|---|
| “I’m preparing for IELTS, can you check this essay?” | “Can you check this essay?” |
| “Focus on articles, I always make mistakes with them” | (Already knows your article problems) |
| “Give me a band score estimate” | (Automatically estimates band score) |
| “Can you give me some practice?” | (Automatically offers practice after finding errors) |
You save time. You get better feedback. Every conversation builds on your real weaknesses.

How would you like ChatGPT to respond?
Give band score estimates. Be direct. After feedback, offer one practice sentence.
Tips for Effective Custom Instructions
1. Be Specific About Your Weaknesses
❌ “I make grammar mistakes”
✅ “I forget articles before singular countable nouns”
The more specific you are, the better ChatGPT can help.
2. Include Your Target Score
ChatGPT adjusts feedback based on your goal. Band 6 feedback is different from Band 8 feedback.
3. Tell ChatGPT How You Want to Practice
Don’t just ask for feedback. Tell ChatGPT to:
- Give you practice exercises
- Quiz you on vocabulary
- Make you rewrite sentences
4. Update Regularly
As you improve, update your Custom Instructions:
- Remove weaknesses you’ve fixed
- Add new areas to focus on
- Update vocabulary you’re learning
5. Keep It Focused
You have limited space. Focus on:
- Your 3-5 biggest weaknesses
- Your target score
- How you want feedback delivered
Don’t try to include everything.
What Happens After You Set This Up
Once your Custom Instructions are saved, every new chat automatically:
- Knows your goal — No need to say “I’m preparing for IELTS”
- Checks your weaknesses — Articles, subject-verb agreement, whatever you specified
- Gives targeted feedback — Focused on what matters for YOUR score
- Offers practice — If you set it up that way
You start a chat, paste your essay, and get personalized IELTS feedback immediately.
No setup. No explanations. Just practice.
Example: Before and After
Before Custom Instructions
You: “Hi, I’m preparing for IELTS and I need Band 7. Can you check this essay? Please focus on grammar, especially articles because I always make mistakes with them. Also check my vocabulary and tell me if I’m using basic words. Can you give me a band score estimate too?”
ChatGPT: [Gives feedback]
You: “Can you give me some practice for the article errors?”
ChatGPT: [Gives practice]
After Custom Instructions
You: “Check this essay: [paste essay]”
ChatGPT: [Gives targeted feedback on your specific weaknesses, estimates band score, offers practice exercise]
Same result. Much faster. Every single time.
Combine With Practice Prompts
Custom Instructions work even better when combined with practice prompts.
After ChatGPT gives you feedback, you can say:
“Based on the errors you just found, create 10 practice sentences for me to correct.”
ChatGPT already knows your weaknesses from Custom Instructions AND from the current conversation. The practice is doubly personalized.
