Practice the new TOEFL iBT® Speaking section

Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview, on the format in use since 21 January 2026. Answer out loud on the real clock, then see an estimated score for every answer and your estimated Speaking band.

The TOEFL Speaking section at a glance

As of September 2026, the Speaking section of the TOEFL iBT test has two tasks: Listen and Repeat (7 items) and Take an Interview (4 items). That is 11 items in about 8 minutes, with no preparation time. This format has been in use since 21 January 2026.

Each answer is scored from 0 to 5, and the section is reported on a 1–6 scale in half-band steps that lines up with CEFR levels. Speaking is the last of the four sections, after Reading, Listening and Writing.

How practice works

The practice area follows the real section: no preparation time, a clock on every answer, and feedback built from what you actually said.

Both tasks, on the real clock

Seven-sentence Listen and Repeat sets with response windows from 8 to 12 seconds that grow as the sentences get longer, and four-question interviews with 45 seconds per answer.

An interviewer who asks, then listens

Interview questions play as audio from an AI-voiced interviewer, one at a time, moving from your own experience to opinions on wider issues, like the prerecorded interviewer on test day.

Practice sets and a full section

Practice one set at a time with feedback after every answer, or take the full speaking section, one set of each task in about 8 minutes, and see your results at the end.

Estimated scores on the 2026 scales

Every answer gets an estimated 0–5 score. Your results add an estimated Speaking band on the 1–6 scale with its CEFR level.

Word-level feedback for Listen and Repeat

See which words you missed or changed against the sentence you heard, with estimates for accuracy, intelligibility and fluency.

Interview feedback you can use

For each interview answer, see estimates for fluency, intelligibility, language use and organization, what to improve, and a stronger version of your answer.

Speaking question bank for the TOEFL iBT® test

Realistic practice questions written to the official 2026 format.

Every scenario and question is original, written for Lingo Copilot to the task formats ETS publishes. Real test content is confidential and is never used.

  • Complete Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview sets: sentences that grow longer through the set, and interview questions that move from personal to broader topics.
  • Study a set before you answer it: a strategy for the set and the setting vocabulary are always visible.
  • Sentence transcripts, interview transcripts and model answers unlock once you have recorded the set, or when you choose Reveal answers.
  • For each interview question: what a strong answer focuses on, an idea bank, and model answers at two levels with notes on why they work.
  • Vocabulary, expressions, grammar and collocations for each interview question, with a difficulty filter.
  • Keep private notes on each set: ideas and key facts, not a script.
  • Mock tests draw only from this bank and pick sets you have not studied first. If you studied a set before a mock, your results say so.

Use model answers to see how a strong answer is built, then answer in your own words.

How TOEFL Speaking is scored

What ETS publishes

  • Each of the 11 answers is scored from 0 to 5 using the ETS scoring guides for Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.
  • Speaking is scored by the ETS AI scoring engine, which is trained on human ratings. Certified human raters score responses the engine is less sure about and review samples for quality.
  • Raw points are converted to the 1–6 band with a method that adjusts for small differences between test versions. ETS does not publish the conversion.
  • ETS sets no passing score. Each university or organization sets its own requirement.

What our estimates are

  • Each answer gets an AI-estimated 0–5 score. Listen and Repeat estimates compare your words with the sentence and check how clearly you said them; interview estimates follow the criteria in the public ETS scoring guide.
  • The Speaking band estimate maps your average item score onto the 1–6 scale in half-band steps and shows the matching CEFR level.
  • Use the estimates to track progress between sessions. For official practice in the 2026 format, ETS offers free sample tests.

What changed on 21 January 2026

Tests taken before 21 January 2026 had a different Speaking section: four tasks (one independent and three integrated), up to 30 seconds to prepare and up to 1 minute to answer, and a Speaking score from 0 to 30.

Much of the prep material online still describes those older tasks. If a guide talks about independent or integrated speaking tasks or a 0–30 Speaking score, it is about the old test.

Until January 2028, score reports also include a comparable total on the old 0–120 scale. If you have a Speaking score from before 21 January 2026, ETS publishes how it compares with the new bands.

TOEFL Speaking bands and CEFR levels

ETS aligns the 1–6 scale with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The same mapping applies to every section: a band of 5 in Speaking lines up with C1.

TOEFL Speaking questions

What changed in TOEFL Speaking in January 2026?

Since 21 January 2026 the Speaking section has two tasks, Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview: 11 items in about 8 minutes with no preparation time, reported on a 1–6 scale. The older section had four independent and integrated tasks and a 0–30 score.

How is TOEFL Speaking scored now?

Each answer is scored from 0 to 5 against the ETS scoring guides by the ETS AI scoring engine, which is trained on human ratings, with certified human raters involved where needed. The raw points convert to a 1–6 section band in half-band steps.

Is TOEFL Speaking face to face?

No. You speak into a microphone, and Take an Interview is a simulated conversation with a prerecorded interviewer.

How long do I have to answer?

Up to 8 to 12 seconds for each Listen and Repeat sentence and 45 seconds for each interview question. There is no preparation time on either task.

What is a good TOEFL Speaking score?

ETS sets no passing score; each university or organization sets its own. As a guide to levels, ETS maps 4–4.5 to B2, 5–5.5 to C1 and 6 to C2.

How do old 0–30 Speaking scores compare with the new scale?

ETS publishes a comparison for tests taken before 21 January 2026. For example, an old Speaking score of 23–24 compares with a band of 4.5, and 25–26 with 5. The full table is on this page.

Can I use templates for Take an Interview?

The ETS scoring guide rewards answers that address the question with relevant, well-developed ideas, and describes answers that mostly reuse the question's own language at the low end of the scale. Practice here gives feedback on how fully each answer responds to the question.

Is my Lingo Copilot score an official TOEFL score?

No. It is an AI estimate for practice on the same 0–5 and 1–6 scales. ETS offers free official sample tests in the 2026 format.

Do you use real TOEFL questions?

No. Every scenario and question is original, written for Lingo Copilot to the task formats ETS publishes. Real test content is confidential and is never used.
