Read Aloud
Look at the text below. You have up to 40 seconds to prepare. When the recording starts (after a beep), read the text aloud as naturally and clearly as you can. Recording stops automatically at the time limit.
A metal spoon left in hot tea soon feels warm to the touch, but a wooden spoon beside it stays cool. Metals let heat travel through them quickly, which scientists call conduction, whereas wood slows it down. This is why many saucepans have wooden or plastic handles.
Free: one score per tool, no signup. Your recording is used only to score it and is not stored.
How it works
- 1
Prepare
You get the same preparation time as the real task (35–40 seconds) to read the passage silently. Start early if you are ready.
- 2
Read aloud
After the beep, read the text aloud once. Recording stops at the item's time limit (35–40 seconds) or when you press Stop.
- 3
Get your estimate
Your recording is transcribed and checked word by word against the passage, and a speech engine rates pronunciation and fluency. You see a 10–90 estimate and your top tip.
How the score is estimated
Read Aloud is scored on three traits: content (how many words you read as written), pronunciation and oral fluency. We transcribe your answer and compare it with the passage word by word: every replaced, missed or added word is one content error. A speech-assessment engine rates your pronunciation and oral fluency on Pearson's 0–5 trait scales.
The three traits are averaged and mapped onto the 10–90 PTE Speaking scale, with a ±5 range, the same way Lingo Copilot estimates PTE Speaking in practice and mock tests. If you read almost none of the passage, pronunciation and fluency get no credit, as in the real test.
One Read Aloud answer is a small sample: the real Speaking score combines many tasks, and Pearson does not publish its exact weighting. Treat the number as a practice estimate.
- Same passages and scorer as the PTE practice in the Lingo Copilot app

PTE Read Aloud scoring: questions
Is this an official PTE Academic score?
No. It is an AI estimate for practice. Only Pearson's PTE Academic test gives official scores, and Pearson does not publish how task scores combine into the 10–90 Speaking score.
How is PTE Read Aloud scored?
Read Aloud is scored on content (each replaced, omitted or inserted word counts as an error), pronunciation (0–5) and oral fluency (0–5). If the content score is 0, pronunciation and oral fluency are not scored either. Read Aloud counts towards both Speaking and Reading.
How long do I have to prepare and to read?
In the real test you get 30–40 seconds to prepare, and the response time depends on the length of the text. This tool uses each passage's own timing: 35–40 seconds to prepare and 35–40 seconds to read.
Why only one free score?
Every score uses real speech-recognition and pronunciation-assessment services, so each device gets one free score with this tool (with a daily limit per network and a daily total for everyone). What happens to my recording?
It is sent to our speech-recognition and pronunciation-scoring providers to score it, and we do not store the audio. We keep the score and feedback so you can see the full breakdown if you sign up within 72 hours. To apply the free-score limits we keep only keyed hashes: of a random ID stored in your browser for 12 months, and of your IP address until the end of the day.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones and computers. Allow microphone access when your browser asks.
