Lingo Copilot Speaking vs ChatGPT: Which Is Better for IELTS?

Comparing a dedicated IELTS app with the world’s most popular AI assistant

Last updated: January 2026

ChatGPT is everywhere. It’s free, it can hold conversations, and millions of people use it for language practice. So why would anyone pay for an IELTS-specific app like Lingo Copilot Speaking?

This comparison explains when ChatGPT is enough—and when it’s not.

Note: We built Lingo Copilot Speaking, so we’re biased. But we genuinely believe ChatGPT is the right choice for some learners, and we’ll explain when.

Quick Answer

Choose If You Need
ChatGPT Free practice, conversation fluency, grammar feedback, flexibility
Lingo Copilot Speaking Pronunciation feedback, IELTS format, band score estimates, no setup
Both ChatGPT for conversation + Lingo Copilot for pronunciation and mock tests

The Key Difference

Here’s what most people don’t realize:

ChatGPT cannot assess your pronunciation.

ChatGPT’s Voice Mode is designed to understand you despite pronunciation errors—not to catch them. When you say “I sink so,” ChatGPT hears “I think so” based on context. That’s great for conversation, but useless for pronunciation feedback.

Pronunciation is 25% of your IELTS Speaking score. If you have pronunciation issues, ChatGPT won’t tell you.

Type: General AI assistant with voice mode

ChatGPT is the world’s most popular AI assistant. With Voice Mode, you can have spoken conversations on any topic—including IELTS practice if you set it up correctly.

Pricing (as of January 2026)

Free $0 ~15 min/day
Plus $20/month ~1 hour/day
Pro $200/month ~3 hours/day

What ChatGPT Does Well

It’s free (or cheap)

The free tier gives you real conversation practice at no cost. Even ChatGPT Plus at $20/month is cheaper than most IELTS tools.

Natural conversation

ChatGPT feels like talking to a real person. It responds naturally, asks follow-up questions, and can discuss any topic in depth. This builds fluency and confidence.

Excellent grammar and vocabulary feedback

Ask ChatGPT to review your response, and it will give detailed feedback on grammar mistakes, awkward phrasing, and vocabulary improvements. This is genuinely useful.

Unlimited flexibility

Practice any topic. Role-play any scenario. Get explanations of grammar rules. ChatGPT adapts to whatever you need.

Always available

247 access, no scheduling, no tutors to book.

Text feedback is strong

If you type your responses (or ask ChatGPT to analyze a transcript), the written feedback on grammar and vocabulary is excellent.

Where ChatGPT Falls Short for IELTS

Cannot assess pronunciation

This is the critical limitation. ChatGPT Voice Mode is optimized to understand accented speech, not evaluate it. It will understand you perfectly even if your pronunciation would cost you marks on IELTS.

We explain this in detail in our article: Can AI Give Accurate IELTS Speaking Scores?

Requires manual setup

To practice IELTS format, you need to write prompts like:

“Act as an IELTS examiner. Ask me Part 1 questions about my hometown, then give me a Part 2 cue card about describing a person, then ask Part 3 follow-up questions about relationships…”

Most people don’t know how to write effective prompts, and the experience never quite matches the real test.

(We wrote a How to Use ChatGPT for IELTS Preparation (Free Prompts Included) if you want to try this.)

No proper IELTS structure

Even with prompts, ChatGPT doesn’t enforce:

  • 1-minute preparation time for Part 2
  • 1-2 minute speaking time for Part 2
  • Proper transition between parts
  • Real exam timing

Band scores are unreliable

If you ask ChatGPT “What band score would I get?”, it will guess—but it’s not calibrated to IELTS criteria. The estimates can be off by 1-2 bands.

May interrupt your pauses

Voice Mode sometimes interprets pauses as “you’re done speaking” and jumps in. This is frustrating when you’re gathering your thoughts—which is normal in IELTS.

No progress tracking

ChatGPT doesn’t remember previous sessions (unless you use memory features, which are limited). You can’t track improvement over time.

No memory between sessions

Each conversation starts fresh. You’ll repeat the same setup every time.

What Lingo Copilot Speaking Does Well

Pronunciation feedback

This is the main difference. We analyze your speech at the phoneme level—individual sounds like /θ/, /ð/, /r/, /l/. You see exactly which sounds you’re mispronouncing, not just a transcription of what you said.

IELTS format built-in

Open the app, start practicing. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3—all with correct timing, real IELTS questions, and proper structure. No prompts to write.

Band score estimates for all 4 criteria

IELTS Speaking is scored on:

  1. Fluency and Coherence
  2. Lexical Resource
  3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy
  4. Pronunciation

We estimate your score on each, helping you identify weaknesses. More calibrated than ChatGPT’s guesses.

Full mock test simulation

Practice complete 11-14 minute tests that mirror the real exam. Build familiarity with format and timing.

Progress tracking

See improvement over time. Track whether you’re approaching your target score.

No setup required

No prompts, no configuration. Just practice.

Where Lingo Copilot Speaking Falls Short

Costs money

$16-40/month is real money. ChatGPT Free costs nothing.

Less natural conversation

Structured IELTS practice isn’t the same as free-flowing conversation. For pure fluency building, ChatGPT feels more natural.

Grammar/vocabulary feedback less detailed

ChatGPT’s text feedback on grammar and vocabulary is more thorough and flexible. We provide feedback, but ChatGPT can go deeper on explanations.

Less flexibility

We focus on IELTS. You can’t suddenly switch to discussing philosophy or practicing job interviews. ChatGPT does everything.

No text chat option

We’re voice-focused. If you want to practice writing or have a text conversation, ChatGPT is better.

Band scores are still estimates

More calibrated than ChatGPT, but still AI estimates. For certainty, you need a human examiner.

Common Questions

Is ChatGPT really free for IELTS practice?

Yes, but with limits. Free tier gives ~15 minutes/day of Voice Mode. That’s enough for one Part 1 + Part 2 practice. For longer sessions, you need ChatGPT Plus ($20/month).

Can ChatGPT really not hear pronunciation errors?

Correct. ChatGPT Voice Mode uses speech recognition optimized to understand accented speech. It converts your speech to text based on context, so “I sink” becomes “I think.” It never tells you that you mispronounced “think” because it never knew you did.

What if my pronunciation is good?

If you’re confident your pronunciation is already Band 7+, ChatGPT may be enough. Use it for fluency and conversation practice. Consider getting one assessment from a human tutor to verify your pronunciation is actually as good as you think.

Can I use ChatGPT prompts instead of paying for an IELTS app?

Yes, and we even provide How to Use ChatGPT for IELTS Preparation (Free Prompts Included). It works reasonably well for:

  • Part 1 question practice
  • Part 3 discussion practice
  • Grammar and vocabulary feedback

It doesn’t work well for:

  • Part 2 timing (no 1-minute prep timer)
  • Pronunciation assessment
  • Accurate band score estimation
  • Full mock test simulation

Which gives better band score estimates?

Neither gives truly accurate estimates—only human examiners can. Lingo Copilot Speaking is more calibrated to IELTS criteria. ChatGPT’s estimates are essentially educated guesses that can be off by 1-2 bands.

What about ChatGPT’s memory feature?

ChatGPT can remember some information between sessions, but it’s limited and doesn’t provide structured progress tracking. It won’t remember your pronunciation patterns or track score improvement over time.

Can I just use the free trial to assess my level?

Yes. Our 5-day free trial gives full access. You can take mock tests, get pronunciation feedback, and see band score estimates. Even if you don’t subscribe, you’ll know your baseline level.
